As per reports, the decision was taken after the death of a female student, who drowned in the university’s fishery earlier this month.
According to officials, the measure intends to reform student behaviour while also upholding the institution’s discipline, and academic and cultural values, The Telegraph reported.
Following a Disciplinary Committee meeting on April 25, the government engineering university issued an order naming all 100 students and detailing the punishments awarded.
The majority of the students were in their third year, followed by 11 fourth-year students, 11 first-year students, two second-year students, and one MSc student, The News Indian Express reported.
According to the statement issued by the authorities, disciplinary action and penalties are determined by the severity of the offence, which includes fines ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 and may result in academic grade reductions.
Additionally, many students’ grades have been reduced to ‘F’. Further reductions in the final grade will take place later based on low attendance or disciplinary punishment for using unfair means during exams. They have until May 9 to pay their fines, which will then be deposited into the students’ activity fund.
“Students are required to pay the penalty or fine on or before May 9, failing which an additional fine of ₹100 per day of delay will be imposed,” read the notification.
Authorities said the students would be forbidden from participating in university-organised sports tournaments and competitions, adding they’d be ineligible for medals, academic awards, or recognitions for excellence.
A university spokesperson said, “Our intent is not to impose unnecessary restrictions on students but to safeguard their lives by ensuring a culture of responsibility and accountability.”
Furthermore, a few parents have also been asked to submit an affidavit stating their children will not engage in any indiscipline during their university period, failing which expulsion or other strict punishment may be applied.
