
With 755 researchers from various IIT campuses, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) comprise the largest percentage of institutions contributing to the list. With nearly 330 faculty members, the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) is second, and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), in Bangalore, includes 117 scientists on the list, as per the Indian Express.
The Stanford University list includes 80 scholars from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), 56 of them are specifically from AIIMS, New Delhi, highlighting the strong representation of medical academics.
In addition to the top colleges for science and engineering, a number of other institutions also contribute significantly.
There are 50 faculty members recognised at Jadavpur University, 51 at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), 46 at Aligarh Muslim University, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) accounts for about 88 scientists in the top-2% bracket. With 59 researchers honoured, Chitkara University, a private university in Punjab, also attracted attention.
According to India Today, 48 instructors from Panjab University are included in this group, highlighting the recognition of more general academic institutions in addition to technical and medical research organisations.
From chemistry and physics to medical and technical specialities, the list includes 174 subfields and 22 major subjects. The majority of the researchers are from large research centres, but there are also one or two researchers from some smaller or distinct institutions, including regional colleges, single-lab units, and speciality research facilities.
The Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% list has emerged as a crucial indicator of academic achievement for both institutions and aspiring scholars.
