Anthropic CEO reveals a simple way techies can stay relevant in the AI era

“There is a need for many to explain it to clients and other people. So jobs can take a different shape,” the 43-year-old CEO of the AI research firm said in an exclusive conversation with CNBC-TV18. 

And as Anthropic adds more customers, the company would need more people who can explain, not just write code, he added.  
Clear, precise, and effective communication is no longer an add-on skill for people working in technology. It’s indispensable. 

Communication is necessary to provide effective prompts and precise instructions to AI tools for optimal outputs. They would also have to understand the requirements of customers or other teams within the organisation, and be able to explain the trade-offs in business choices. 

Along with specialised technological skills, empathy, creativity, and the ability to build and maintain nuanced relationships, effective articulation is required to align innovation, business goals, and customer needs.

As AI augments jobs, engineers who communicate clearly, by asking the right questions and simplifying complex ideas, will stand out over pure coders.

As Richard Baldwin argued in his 2019 book, The Globotics Upheaval: Globalization, Robotics, and the Future of Work, the best way to beat the machines is to be more human, not less. 

Being a joy to work with may also be a necessary attribute. People who can collaborate more effectively within and outside teams are likely in demand.

People with higher emotional intelligence, who can navigate conflict, motivate colleagues, and build trust within the organisation and with customers, are likely to thrive.  

Consequently, students using AI to complete assignments for quick results are undermining genuine learning and skill development. It poses serious risks not just to academic integrity, but also to long-term competence.

It’s just as important to understand the inner workings of the systems that influence our world, to develop analytical thinking, and to communicate in a deeply personal voice.
