The notification was released on February 4 on the UPSC website, and the deadline for online applications is February 24. Compared to the 979 openings announced last year and the 1,105 roles filled in 2024, the announcement states that a total of 933 vacancies will be filled through CSE 2026.
One of the major changes is that candidates who were previously assigned to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other Group ‘A’ services based on previous examinations are not eligible to take part in CSE 2026 while they are still employed.
Such a candidate will not be permitted to take the Main test if they pass the Preliminary (Prelims) exam and are hired before the Main exam. The applicant will not be given consideration for service allocation in the current cycle, even if their employment occurs after the Main exam but before the final result.
The Indian Police Service (IPS) has slightly different regulations. IPS officers who were previously selected remain eligible to retake the CSE, but they will not be able to opt for or be assigned to IPS based on the 2026 results. This is meant to prevent applicants from using several IPS options to enhance their service preference.
Another significant feature is a one-time reattempt rule for applicants who received a service allocation in CSE 2026 or earlier years. If they receive a one-time exemption from attending training, these candidates may decide to retake the CSE 2027 test in an attempt to improve their service or rank. Their service allotment will be terminated if they do not participate in training or accept the exemption.
If a candidate appears in CSE 2027 and is selected again, they can decide between the 2026 service and the 2027 service. For the one they select, they must officially enrol in training; the allocation that they did not select will be revoked.
Candidates who have already joined the service must resign from their existing position in order to reapply after CSE 2027. Those who were chosen before 2026 (for instance, in 2025 or earlier) will have one chance to take the 2026 or 2027 exam without having to quit. However, they must leave the service to appear for the exam after 2027.
The UPSC Civil Services Examination is a pan-India test held to select candidates for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Revenue Service (IRS), and other Group A and Group B services.
