The Election Commission has rejected the nomination papers of three Congress candidates and 15 others for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, Press Trust of India reported on Tuesday, March 24.
Assam will vote for its 126-member Legislative Assembly on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4. The last date for filing nominations was March 23, scrutiny took place on March 24, and candidates can withdraw their nominations until March 26.
The election is being seen as a key test for the BJP-led government, which is seeking a third consecutive term in the state. In the outgoing Assembly, the BJP holds 64 seats, along with allies — Asom Gana Parishad (9), United People’s Party Liberal (7) and Bodoland People’s Front (3). The Congress has 26 MLAs, followed by AIUDF (15) and others.

The BJP-led alliance is projected to retain power in Assam, according to Network18’s opinion poll, with the NDA estimated to win 80–90 seats in the 126-member Assembly, ahead of the Congress-led alliance.
According to the Network18 opinion poll, the BJP-led NDA has a clear advantage in terms of both voter perception and leadership preference.
The survey indicates that the NDA is likely to get 42.7% votes, standing comfortably above the majority mark, while the Congress-led Opposition alliance is projected at 29–39 seats, with 36.1% votes. Smaller players such as the AIUDF (3–7 seats) and UPPL (1–3 seats) are expected to have a limited impact.
In terms of vote share, the NDA is projected to secure around 42.7%, ahead of the Opposition alliance at 36.1%, reflecting a clear gap in voter support.
