Bharti Airtel cited the relief granted to Vodafone Idea Ltd. and has sought similar relief, the department added.
The Supreme Court order of October 2025 permitted reconsideration of AGR dues of Vodafone Idea and the order was passed only with regards to the mentioned telecom firm, DoT said.
Hence, the restructuring of Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues is in compliance with the Supreme Court’s orders, it said.
Post the SC order, the Union Cabinet had approved a five-year moratorium on AGR dues, 10-year repayment schedule post-moratorium and reworking of AGR dues.
Union telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had also previously stated that Bharti Airtel would have to secure a similar order from the Supreme Court for AGR relief.
The AGR dispute has been a contentious issue ever since 2019, when the top court upheld DoT’s definition of AGR, significantly increasing the liabilities of telecom operators, with Bharti Airtel’s approximately coming in at 42,000 crore.
Bharti Airtel shares were trading 0.5% lower at ₹1,826.5 apiece at 1.30 pm on Friday. The stock has declined 13.4% this year, so far.
