Children ask very interesting questions about the world we live in. Among the most asked questions is, “How old is the Earth?” The answer to this question is not simple. It involves science, space, rocks, and even meteorites. Scientists have been studying the Earth, space, rocks, and meteorites for a very long time. After all these years of research, they have found that the Earth is 4.5 billion years old. This is a very huge number, and we cannot even imagine such a huge number. Here is a simple presentation on the age of the Earth that kids can easily understand:
The Earth is very, very old
The Earth is 4.54 billion years old. If we start counting every second without a stop, it will take us a very long time to reach such a huge number. Scientists have not come up with this huge number randomly. They have been studying rocks, fossils, and space materials and have come up with this huge number. The Earth was made at the same time as the rest of the solar system. At that time, slow and gradual changes in space caused dust and gas to come together and form planets. It took millions of years for this to happen, and that is how the earth came into existence.
How did scientists find the Earth’s age?
Scientists use a technique called “Radiometric Dating” to determine the age of rocks. If rocks contain small particles, these particles change over time. By determining the changes in these particles, the age of the rock can be calculated. The oldest rocks on Earth are more than 4 billion years old. Scientists have also analyzed rocks from the Moon. They have also analyzed meteorites that have come to the Earth. All these have helped in determining the age of the Earth and the solar system.
The Earth was very different before
The Earth, when first formed, was not like the present-day Earth. It was very hot, full of volcanoes, had no water, no plants, no animals, and no humans. Gradually, over millions of years, the Earth cooled down, and water accumulated to form oceans. Then, small living beings appeared in the oceans. Gradually, life started to come on the Earth. All these changes have been studied by experts in the science of “Geology.”
When did dinosaurs live?
Dinosaurs did not live on the Earth when it was first formed. Dinosaurs lived on the Earth between 65 to 230 million years ago. Even though this is a very old date, it is not as old as the date of the formation of the Earth. Humans have lived on the Earth for only 300,000 years. This is a very small time compared to the age of the Earth. Thus, it can be said that the Earth has been in existence for a very long time before humans came onto the Earth.
What about the future of Earth ?
According to scientists, the Earth is going to exist for many more billions of years. In the far future, the Sun is going to heat up, but this is not going to affect life on Earth. This is what is taught in Astronomy, where scientists learn about the planets, the Sun, and the universe. There is no reason to worry, as this is going to occur in the far future.
