In the aftermath of prolonged and unexpected snowfall which had paused activities on the ground, plans for the forthcoming Char Dham Yatra have been picked up again in Kedarnath as authorities step up efforts to ensure everything is prepared in advance of the pilgrimage period.According to BKTC (Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee), activities have been stepped up once again due to improvement in weather conditions, which had previously seen operations and infrastructural works being put on hold. This was after the heavy snowfall had put into question the ability to meet timelines for the country’s biggest annual pilgrimages.Following better weather conditions in the area, activities on the ground have been resumed on an urgent basis. Various activities have been ongoing as authorities work hard to ensure all is ready before the arrival of huge crowds of pilgrims.

Badrinath and Kedarnath Kapat opening dates
The opening of the ‘kapat’ (doors of the temple) of the Kedarnath and Badrinath temples signifies the beginning of the highly revered ‘Char Dham Yatra’. As per the information published by the official website of the Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee, the date of the opening of the ‘Kedarnath Kapat’ is set for 22 April 2026, whereas the opening of the ‘Badrinath Kapat’ is scheduled for 23 April 2026. These dates carry religious significance for devotees since both temples close during winter because of the extreme climate conditions prevailing in the Himalayas.Considering the religious importance and the difficult geographical nature of the Himalayan region, proper preparations are viewed as necessary to guarantee the safety of pilgrims as well as a good experience.
Weather obstacle and speedy recovery
According to reports, there has been an unusual amount of snowfall in the area of Kedarnath, leading to disruption in transport facilities, halting the process of supplying resources, and interrupting construction works. Nonetheless, quick recovery from such weather disturbances has helped officials restore progress.Officials from the temple committee, along with other administrative departments, have been working together to make up for the time lost due to weather-related problems.

Government steps up oversight
The Government of Uttarakhand has also intensified its monitoring of preparations. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami recently chaired a review meeting with district officials in Nainital, where discussions centred on pilgrimage readiness, law and order, and other logistical aspects. The official post of the CM Office Uttarakhand (@ukcmo) reads, “On this occasion, the Chief Minister said that the state government is committed to making the Char Dham Yatra more convenient and accessible while respecting the faith of the devotees. The convenience, safety, and better arrangements for all devotees coming to the state for darshan are the government’s topmost priority. He stated that instructions have been given to all relevant departments to work in coordination so that there is no inconvenience during the yatra…” Authorities are placing emphasis on coordination between departments to manage the anticipated influx of pilgrims. With thousands expected to undertake the journey, ensuring seamless operations across transport, accommodation, and safety systems remains a priority. The post also adds, “the state government is continuously striving to promote religious tourism while strengthening the local economy. Instructions have been issued to officials to provide all basic facilities, keeping in mind that devotees do not face any inconvenience during the Char Dham Yatra. He appealed to everyone to participate in the successful conduct of the Char Dham Yatra in Devbhoomi Uttarakhand.”Considering the fact that the region is one that is remote as well as at a very high altitude, these will be vital not only in terms of convenience but safety as well. It will also be imperative that temporary campsites, health services stations, and emergency response mechanisms form a part of the plan as well, although the immediate concern revolves around repairing core infrastructure.
Impact on travel plans
With regards to those who were planning on undertaking the Char Dham Yatra this year, these recent events show that despite the disruption due to adverse weather conditions, efforts have been geared towards ensuring that the work gets done within set timelines.
