Heatwave impacts school schedules
States like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha are closing schools early because of heatwaves. The authorities are ready to extend these closures if the hot weather persists.
In Odisha and West Bengal, they’re keeping reopening dates flexible to prioritise student safety. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) expects the monsoon to hit Kerala early on May 27, and this could affect school schedules in the south.

State-wise reopening dates
- Delhi: Schools will be reopening on July 1, 2025. The vacation commenced on May 11 and will conclude on June 30.
- Uttar Pradesh: The summer vacation in UP began on May 20 and will conclude on June 15, a Business Standard report stated. However, the reopening of schools is scheduled for June 30.
- Rajasthan schools will reopen on June 16 after a vacation period from May 1 to June 15, as per Rajasthan Education Department circular, reported JagranJosh.
- Madhya Pradesh schools will reopen on June 16 after a vacation period of May 1 to June 15, as this is a standard vacation period for MP Board schools.
- Tamil Nadu schools will reopen on June 2 after a vacation period which lasted from April 30 to June 1. This is however subject to change, depending on the weather conditions.
- Bihar: Academic institutions will be reopening on June 23 after a vacation period from June 2 to June 21.
- Punjab: The schools will reopen on July 1 after a month-long summer break from June 1 to June 30, announced Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains, as per JagranJosh.
- Haryana: All state-run schools will reopen on July 1 after a month-long summer break from June 1 to June 30.
- Karnataka: Schools will be reopening on May 29, as the summer break in Karnataka began on April 10 and will conclude on May 28.
- Kerala: Schools will be reopening on June 1 as summer break began on April 1 and will conclude on May 31.
- Chhattisgarh will reopen schools on June 16, as per Jagran report, after a break which lasted from April 25 to June 15.
- Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat, will see schools reopening on June 15, June 9, and June 4, respectively.
- West Bengal schools closed for annual summer break from April 30 onwards, have tentative reopening date of June 2.
CBSE and Kendriya Vidyalaya schedules
CBSE-affiliated schools are set to reopen on June 13, 2025, while colleges will welcome students back starting June 19.
Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) follow different summer break schedules based on their locations: some will have a 40-day break from May 9 to June 17, while others will be in the vacation phase for 50 days from May 2 to June 20.
Tamil Nadu may delay reopening
In Tamil Nadu, the reopening date of June 2 might change according to advice from the Climate Management Committee. The School Education Minister has promised that any decisions will focus on what’s best for the students, stated the Business Standard report.
