The exercise of reorganising the party organisation is now gaining momentum. Presently, Union Health Minister JP Nadda is the national president of the party, whose term has already been extended. Nadda became the president in January 2020 and in 2023 his term was extended till the Lok Sabha elections. Now that the general elections happened in 2024, there is a chatter in political circles about the possible change in the BJP leadership.
Reports said that BJP may issue a notification for the election of the national president in the second week of June. Under this, organisational elections will be conducted in various states following which the election will be held at the national level. The election process will be according to the constitution of the party, which will include the entire process of nomination, scrutiny, and voting.
A Central Election Committee will be formed to maintain transparency in the election process and the elections will be held under its supervision. It is not yet clear whether Nadda will run for party presidentship or a new face will emerge.
Tasks for new BJP president
The new president will play an important role in formulating the strategy for the party’s upcoming missions, especially the 2026 state assembly elections and the 2029 general elections. This election is being considered as a step to determine the party’s future course of action.
Through the organisational election, the party’s structure will be strengthened and also its hold on the ground level as party workers will be involved in the process of leadership change. Although no official announcement has been made by the party so far, internal preparations have indicated that the BJP leadership is in the mood to complete the election process on time.
Other parties are also keeping an eye on the election of the BJP president, as this will impact the party’s policy, organisational priorities, and future strategies. At present, both party workers and leaders are excited about the possible change. The month of June can prove to be very important for the BJP politically.
