Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament Live Updates: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju tabled the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, in the Rajya Sabha, where it cleared a 12-hour marathon debate with a 128-95 vote. As Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar announced its passage, NDA MPs erupted in cheers.
The Lok Sabha had earlier cleared the contentious Bill following intense deliberations. While the ruling NDA defended it as a measure to ensure transparency and efficiency in Waqf administration, the Opposition criticised it as “anti-Muslim.” All amendments proposed by the Opposition were rejected, and the Bill was passed after a division of votes—288 in favour and 232 against.
The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, introduces key changes, including strengthening Waqf tribunals, enforcing a structured selection process, and fixing tenures to streamline dispute resolution. It also reduces the mandatory contribution of Waqf institutions to Waqf boards from 7% to 5% while mandating state-sponsored audits for institutions earning over ₹1 lakh annually.
