
The Trinamool Congress supremo appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to allow any ‘atrocious law’ and to also keep a check on Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The remarks came during her meeting with Muslim clerics and religious leaders of the Muslim community regarding the Waqf Amendment Act.
“BJP planned to engineer riots during Ram Navami, but failed; I will not allow division of people, I want unity. We will recall all anti-people Bills passed by BJP after dislodging it from power at Centre,” Mamata
said.
Security has been tightened outside Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata where the meeting was held.
Violent protests erupted on April 11 and 12 in pockets of the district, including Suti, Dhulian, and Jangipur, following anger over the amended Waqf Act. The demonstrations soon escalated into clashes, leaving at least three people dead and several injured.
Personnel of the BSF, CRPF, state police and RAF have been deployed in large numbers in Jangipur, Dhuliyan, Suti and Shamsherganj, where no new incident of violence was reported in the past 48 hours, officials said.
On reports of Bangladeshi radicals involved in the violence, she asked, “Isn’t it BSF’s duty to guard boundary?”
Reports said Bangladeshi radicals, allegedly aided by local leaders of a political party, were “involved” in the recent violence triggered by anti-Waqf law agitations in Murshidabad. Report said members of two Bangladesh-based radical outfits — Jamaat-ul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT) — were allegedly involved in the violence in Murshidabad, which left three persons dead.
The Chief Minister announces ₹10 lakh as ex gratia for each family of three persons who died in the violence.
