Waqf Amendment Bill Highlights: As the Budget Session of Parliament nears its conclusion on April 4, the Lok Sabha passed the Waqf (Amendment) Bill with 288 votes in favour and 232 against. PM Modi was notably absent during the voting. The stage for a fierce exchange between the Treasury and Opposition benches was set after Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju moved the revised version of the legislation, now titled the Unified Waqf Management Empowerment, Efficiency and Development (UMEED) Bill. The Opposition, led by the INDIA bloc, remained steadfast in its opposition, asserting their united resolve to defeat the legislation. Originally introduced last year, the Bill was referred to a joint parliamentary committee for review before being brought back with amendments. Rijiju defended the changes, outlining key provisions aimed at enhancing the management and oversight of Waqf properties. The debate saw intense arguments from both sides before the Bill ultimately cleared the Lok Sabha.
