MPs of various opposition parties came together to protest the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar and the allegations of the BJP manipulating the voter list. It was stopped by security officials.Â
Gandhi has since been detained along with 29 other MPs, including Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut and TMC’s Sagarika Ghose. Â
The police took them to the Parliament Street Police Station, stating that protesting MPs showed up in large numbers even though the poll body had permitted 30 MPs to enter its premises.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh alleged that democracy was being assaulted and murdered right outside Parliament as Delhi Police stopped the protest march.
PTI reported that the police had also set up barricades to prevent the protesting MPs from heading to the EC headquarters.
“We wanted to take out a peaceful protest march from Parliament to the Election Commission office. However, we have been stopped by the Delhi Police from moving forward. We had already written to the EC that all MPs collectively wanted to hand over a memorandum to the EC,” Ramesh told PTI.
“Democracy is being assaulted, democracy is being murdered right outside Parliament,” he added.
