Speaking at a commemorative rally, CM Singh Saini recounted the hardships of communities uprooted during the subcontinent’s division. Being the third-largest state in the country, the CM announced that targeted groups whose issues had long been ‘suppressed in files’ would now be acknowledged and given assistance.
Earlier this week, on the second day of the monsoon session of the state parliament, the chief minister declared that the Haryana government would offer jobs to all 121 of the next of kin of those killed in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
During the session, he reminded the House that riots erupted in the state following the assassination of then-prime minister Indira Gandhi, resulting in the burning of around 20 gurdwaras, 221 houses, 154 stores, 57 factories, three railway coaches, and 85 vehicles. There were 121 fatalities and 58 injuries overall, as per The Times of India.
Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (HSGMC) head Jagdish Singh Jhinda praised the action as admirable and stated that, even if it comes 40 years later, he and his committee appreciate the statement.
On Wednesday, Singh Saini highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s involvement as an important figure in the fight for justice, claiming that he had “reopened files that were forgotten” and ensured that those who suffered were no longer left behind, as reported by ANI.
He emphasised that generations had been struggling—particularly in Haryana—due to economic collapse and loss of livelihoods, citing the ‘84 families’ that were most affected.
CM Singh Saini went on to explain that the state administration responded by announcing that one member of each qualified family could seek help directly from the District Collector (DC). “The application will be accepted only once per family, ensuring equitable distribution of relief,” he added.
A clip of the conversation was shared on X (formerly Twitter) by the news outlet, stating: “Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini says, “…The victims of the 1984 riots, those families whose businesses were ruined…so we have decided that one member of such families will be given a job…”
