Below is a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis of the INDIA bloc, spearheaded by the RJD–Congress combine.
Strengths
Solid core vote bank: The RJD commands a loyal Muslim-Yadav (MY) support base, collectively accounting for nearly 30% of the electorate.
Emerging leadership: With RJD founder Lalu Prasad stepping back, the party has positioned his son, Tejashwi Yadav, as its undisputed leader. A former deputy chief minister, Tejashwi has gained traction among Bihar’s youth.
Revitalised Congress cadre: The Congress’s Voter Adhikar Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, has helped energise party workers and improve grassroots engagement across the state.
Weaknesses
Dynastic control and legal troubles: The RJD remains heavily dominated by Lalu Prasad, Tejashwi Yadav, and close family members — many of whom face legal challenges, including ongoing probes such as the “land-for-jobs” scam investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
Internal discord: Despite Tejashwi’s growing acceptance among party workers, frequent outbursts and erratic behaviour from siblings like Tej Pratap Yadav and other family members often divert his attention from party and alliance management to internal firefighting.
Opportunities
Generational shift: Tejashwi’s youthful image provides the INDIA bloc a chance for a broader image makeover. His focus on employment generation, migration, and law and order resonates with the state’s aspirational voters.
Caste census leverage: While the ruling NDA claims credit for the caste survey conducted two years ago, the RJD’s participation in the government during that period — and its role in increasing quotas for deprived communities — can reinforce its “Mandal politics” credentials.
Alliance synergy: The partnership with like-minded parties such as the Congress and CPI(ML) Liberation, coupled with Nitish Kumar’s recent return to the NDA fold, could help the RJD consolidate the Muslim vote and appeal to disenfranchised groups.
Threats
Internal ambitions and alliance strains: Having been out of power for an extended period, the INDIA bloc faces the dual challenge of managing ambitious leaders within its ranks and maintaining unity among diverse alliance partners.
