However, those objections would be considered the finalisation of the electoral roll.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi heard the petitions filed by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) parties.
The parties had sought extension of the deadline so that people could file the objections and claims in the ongoing voter list revision.
Appearing for the Election Commission (EC), senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi told the court, “Any extension of deadline will lead to disruption of the entire exercise and finalisation of final electoral roll.”
He said that 99.5% of the 2.74 crore electors in the draft roll had filed the eligibility documents. He countered the RJD on its claims of filing 36 claims, stating that the party had filed only 10 such claims which had been “duly accepted,” reported news agency PTI.
The EC further said that most of the claims and objections filed by the political parties to those people whose documents were incomplete.
Court directs volunteers to assistÂ
The Supreme Court directed Bihar’s legal service authority to deploy paralegal volunteers to help the voters and the political parties in filing the objections and claims to the draft roll which was published on August 1.
The bench stated that the whole matter stems from “trust deficit” between the parties and the authorities.
The bench also directed the paralegal volunteers to submit the confidential reports with the concerned district judges, and posted the next hearing of the matter to September 8.
The Opposition has alleged that the ruling BJP government in the Centre and its alliance in Bihar are “stealing votes” from various parts of the country.
With Bihar Assembly Elections slated to be held later this year, the timing of the electoral roll revision has faced backlash from the opposing INDIA alliance.
