By-elections across five assemblies can be interpreted as one in which the voters in the state of Punjab and West Bengal favoured regional parties while in Gujarat and Kerala, the national parties remained in contention. While these results are at best micro-trends which cannot be extrapolated across the state, these offer a whiff of possibilities to read what is on the voters’ mind, observes political analyst and writer K V Prasad.
