Two assembly seats will go to the polls in Gujarat, while one each in Kerala, West Bengal and Punjab will also elect new representatives.
The voting for all five assembly seats will take place on June 19; the counting of votes is scheduled for June 23. Kadi and Visavadar in Gujarat, Nilambur in Kerala, Ludhiana West in Punjab, and Kaliganj in West Bengal will go to the polls. The Election Commission also shared the reason behind the by-elections in these constituencies.
Gujarat | In Gujarat, a by-election was called for the Kadi seat after sitting MLA Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki died. The Visavadar seat is going to the polls due to the resignation of current member Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai.
The Aam Aadmi Party announced Jagdish Chavda as its candidate for the Kadi assembly constituency and Gopal Italia from the Visavadar seat, as per the Indian Express.
Kerala | The Nilambur seat in Kerala will go to a by-election after MLA P V Anvar resigned. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has nominated M. Swaraj as the Left Democratic Front’s (LDF) candidate. The Congress-led UDF is yet to officially announce their candidate.
Punjab | The death of sitting MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi necessitated the by-election to Punjab’s Ludhiana West seat.
According to India Today, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has fielded Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, the Congress has named former minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has nominated Parupkar Singh Ghuman as its candidate.
West Bengal | In West Bengal, a by-election to the Kaliganj Assembly seat is taking place following the death of sitting assembly member Nasiruddin Ahamed. For the Kaliganj Assembly by-election, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) nominated Alifa Ahmed as its candidate.
