US President Donald Trump has reportedly welcomed Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s proposal to pay the salaries of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) workers. TSA workers experienced a funding lapse at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Recently, the world’s richest person made an offer on the microblogging site X (formerly Twitter), saying that he would step in to support TSA employees who have gone without pay as the funding impasse continues. The situation has led to disruptions at airports across the United States, with long security lines reported during the spring break travel period.According to a report by Newsweek, responding to the suggestion, Trump said, “Yeah, I’d love it. I think it’s great. Let him do that.”In his X post, Musk wrote, “I would like to offer to pay the salaries of TSA personnel during this funding impasse that is negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.”
Why Elon Musk is paying the salaries of TSA workers
Elon Musk has agreed to pay workers’ salaries as the DHS remains under a shutdown. This has left thousands of TSA officers working without pay for weeks. As essential employees, screeners have continued reporting to duty despite missing paychecks, leading to resignations, increased sick-outs, and concerns around airport security and passenger safety. Musk’s proposal, as well as Trump’s response, highlight how unconventional ideas are entering the discussion as Congress remains at a standstill. The funding lapse at the DHS began in February after lawmakers failed to agree on a spending bill, with disagreements largely focused on immigration enforcement and oversight of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. While Democrats have pushed to fund the TSA separately, Republicans have opposed those efforts, calling for a broader funding agreement. As a result, TSA workers have gone weeks without pay, contributing to staff shortages and long security lines at airports in cities such as Atlanta, Houston, and New York City. Some airports have advised passengers to arrive earlier than usual, and officials have noted a rise in call-out rates among screeners.Against this backdrop, Musk said on X that he would be willing to cover TSA salaries during the impasse, stating the shutdown was “negatively affecting the lives of so many Americans at airports throughout the country.” While it is unclear whether such a plan would be legally allowed, the idea prompted responses from lawmakers.John Fetterman described Musk’s offer as “incredibly generous” and criticised Congress for the situation. “TSA agents across the country are relying on food pantries and community donations just to get by,” he said, adding that he remains the only Democrat to vote with Republicans to fully fund DHS and ensure workers are paid.Fetterman’s position stands out, as he has at times taken a different stance from his party on DHS and immigration-related matters, including supporting full funding without additional enforcement conditions. A bill to restore DHS funding failed to advance in the Senate on Friday, despite backing from Republicans and Fetterman.Despite the attention around Musk’s proposal, there is no indication it will be implemented soon. The DHS, TSA, and the White House have not outlined any process to accept private funding for federal workers, and such a move would likely face legal review. For now, pressure is expected to build on Congress as the shutdown continues, with negotiations ongoing but no clear resolution in sight.
