
Several professionals are also taking up freelancing opportunities to achieve this goal. The late pandemic era also saw the popularisation of a trend where professionals took up remote jobs and travelled for leisure at the same time. Such individuals are known as ‘digital nomads’.
In 2023, Spain announced a revolutionary pathway for remote workers hailing from non-EU nations to avail temporary residency.
Known as the ‘Digital Nomad Visa’, the programme is meant for foreign remote workers, including freelancers, extending their professional services to companies located outside Spain. These individuals are required to conduct their professional activities exclusively through tools such as computers and with the help of telecommunication means like the internet and/or telematics.
Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Eligibility criteria
– Graduate or postgraduate degree from prestigious universities, vocational training centres, or renowned business schools; or work experience of at least three years.
Documents needed for Spain Digital Nomad Visa
– Duly filled national visa application of Spain.
– One recent passport-sized photograph.
– Valid and current passport: Original and a photocopy of the page(s) carrying the biometric data.
NOTE: To obtain Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa, the applicant must be holding a passport with at least one year of validity and two blank pages. They should also make sure that the passport was issued not more than 10 years ago.
– Criminal record certificate (for adults only).
– Health insurance: A private health insurance purchased from the applicant’s home country and valid within Spain.
Spain Digital Nomad Visa: Process
The applicant will be required to apply for the Digital Nomad Visa with their local Spanish embassy or consulate. The process is largely similar to that in the case of any other visa. These steps include an interview of the applicant by the mission.
