Indian IT giant Infosys has terminated the contracts of 240 trainees after they failed to meet the qualifying standards in the company’s internal assessments, despite being given multiple opportunities. According to Moneycontrol, the decision was communicated via internal emails on April 18, following the trainees’ inability to pass the ‘Generic Foundation Training Programme’.
The trainees were offered additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, mock assessments, and three separate attempts, but were ultimately unable to meet the required benchmark.
This move comes just a day after Infosys reported an 11.7% year-on-year drop in net profit, recording ₹7,033 crore for the fourth quarter ending March 2025 (Q4 FY25).
An internal email accessed by Moneycontrol read:
“You have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘Generic foundation training program’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts. As a result, you will not be able to continue your journey for the apprenticeship program.”
In an effort to soften the blow, Infosys has rolled out a number of support initiatives for those affected. These include free upskilling programmes in partnership with NIIT and UpGrad, aimed at equipping individuals for potential roles in the BPM (Business Process Management) sector or to help them continue developing their IT capabilities. The same training opportunities are being extended to trainees who were let go in February.
Back in February, Infosys had dismissed over 300 trainees at its Mysuru campus after they too failed to clear internal assessments—roughly half the intake from the October 2024 cohort. Over 100 of those trainees later approached the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), seeking intervention to have their jobs reinstated and calling for steps to prevent similar incidents in future.
In its latest internal message, Infosys said it would be offering professional outplacement services to help the impacted trainees explore roles outside the company. Trainees can also opt into Infosys-sponsored external training in either BPM-specific roles or foundational IT training. Upon successful completion, they may reapply for positions within Infosys BPM.
Aside from training and career support, Infosys is also providing financial assistance. Affected trainees will receive one month’s salary as ex gratia, along with accommodation and travel allowances from the company’s Mysuru campus to either Bengaluru or their hometowns.
According to Moneycontrol, around 730 trainees from the October 2024 batch sat their third and final assessment on April 17. Results for the next group are expected next week. Many of these individuals had already waited over two years to be onboarded, with hiring delays attributed to the broader economic slowdown affecting client spending. These trainees had initially been recruited for roles such as System Engineers and Digital Specialist Engineers.
Infosys’ Email to Dismissed Trainees
“Further to the announcement of the results of your final assessment attempt, please be informed that, you have not met the qualifying criteria in the ‘Generic foundation training program’ despite the additional preparation time, doubt-clearing sessions, several mock assessments and three attempts. As a result, you will not be able to continue your journey for the apprenticeship program. While this may be a disappointing outcome, we are here to further support you in your learning journey.
As you explore opportunities outside of Infosys, we have planned professional outplacement services to help you on that journey. We also wish to offer you another career pathway, by taking an Infosys sponsored external training to prepare for potential roles in the BPM industry. On successful completion of the training, you may also apply to available opportunities in Infosys BPM Limited. However, if you wish to continue honing your IT skills, you also have an option to choose an Infosys sponsored external training program on Information Technology fundamentals to further support your IT career journey.”
