The company has issued a statement clarifying that the number of employees laid off is just over 300 — and not 400, as reported — and denied claims that any staffer was forcefully terminated.
“At Infosys, we have a rigorous hiring process where all freshers, after undergoing extensive foundational training at our Mysuru campus, are expected to clear internal assessments.
The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES) had claimed that Infosys sacked 700 campus recruits.
In the statement, Infosys said the decision to let go of the 300-odd trainees (337, to be exact) was taken after they failed to clear three rounds of the internal assessments.
“All freshers get three attempts to clear the assessment, failing which they will not be able to continue with the organisation, as is also mentioned in their contract. This process has been in existence for over two decades and ensures a high quality of talent availability for our clients,” the statement added.
The number of trainees laid off is approximately half of those onboarded in October 2024.
As it happens, the trainees were onboarded after a two-and-a-half-year-long wait, caused by a macroeconomic slowdown prompting clients of IT companies to halt spending on projects.
However, the company has yet to address allegations from news reports claiming that testing parameters and the syllabus were altered without notifying the trainees. Additionally, NITES has filed a official complaint with the labour and corporate ministries, seeking “immediate action”.
