This came as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah hiked the excise revenue target to ₹40,000 crore in his Budget speech for 2025-26.
“In just one year, the government hiked (excise) taxes thrice. This is hitting the poor. The excise target of ₹40,000 crore…how will this be achieved without hiking taxes again?” senior JD(S) lawmaker MT Krishnappa, who represents Turuvekere, said, Deccan Herald reported.
His comments were directed at the ongoing welfare initiative of giving ₹2,000 for women.
#WATCH | Bengaluru, Karnataka: In the state assembly yesterday, JD(S) MLA MT Krishnappa said, “You (state government) are giving women Rs 2,000 per month, free electricity and free bus travel. Anyway, it is our money. So, those who drink should be given two bottles of liquor free… pic.twitter.com/sahRddxZ1C

“We can’t stop people from drinking, especially the labour class,” Krishnappa said. “At their cost, you’re giving ₹2,000 per month to women, free electricity and free bus travel. That’s our money anyway. So, to those who drink, give them two bottles of liquor for free every week. Let them drink. How can we give them (men) money every month?” he said, the report added
“Give something for men…two bottles a week. What’s wrong? The government can provide this through societies,” Krishnappa suggested, leaving the Assembly amused.
State Energy Minister KJ George was quick to hit back at the Opposition MLA. He said, “Win the election, form the government and do this. We’re trying to make people drink less.”
Opposing the idea, Speaker UT Khader said, “Without giving two bottles, we are already struggling. What will happen if we give them liquor for free?”
While senior Congress lawmaker BR Patil batted for prohibition. Patil said the excise revenue is sin money which cannot build the nation.
