Four-member BJP committee in Kolkata
A four-member ‘fact-finding’ team from the BJP, comprising Union Ministers Satpal Singh and Meenakshi Lekhi, along with Members of Parliament (MP) Biplab Kumar Deb and Manan Kumar Mishra, arrived in Kolkata on Monday (June 30) to look into the case.
“Every BJP member and official stands firmly with every sister and daughter of West Bengal. I am confident that Mamata Banerjee’s government will allow us to visit the site of the incident, discuss with the officers who conducted the investigation, and talk to the college authorities. After that, we have requested time to meet the Police Commissioner and the Chief Secretary,” Singh told reporters after reaching Kolkata, reported ANI.
“I am confident that we will be granted permission to go there, and if they do not grant permission, it will mean they want to hide the truth,” he added.

Lekhi said that the committee sought time to meet the officials to understand the developments and actions by the authorities.
“Communication with the public is essential. Those who are in the administration but do not listen to the public’s voice or engage with them are working against the administration… Our workers have sought time to meet with the Police Commissioner, Chief Secretary and college authorities to understand what actions have been taken and how far the process has progressed,” she said.
However, the team alleged that they were not granted access to visit the college or meet the state officials. “Without being biased, I request that the government that this is a public issue, and we can also help in resolving it. You (West Bengal government) should talk to us once, listen, and meet so that if we can provide any assistance, we would like to do so… Officially, we have not yet had any contact with them,” she added.

Petitions filed in SC, Calcutta HC
On the other hand, the Calcutta High Court has permitted three advocates to file separate Public Interest Litigations (PILs), seeking a court-monitored probe and the implementation of security measures across West Bengal’s educational institutions, reported LiveLaw.
The petitions demand heightened campus safety protocols, especially after the death of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.
Separately, a plea filed before the Supreme Court has requested a CBI-led investigation, citing the need for an impartial time-bound probe. The plea also calls for interim compensation of ₹50 lakhs for the survivor and comprehensive safety reforms, including CCTV installations and regular audits, as per ANI.
What’s the progress so far?
The incident took place between 7:30 pm and 8 pm on June 25. The victim was reportedly dragged to various parts of the campus before being assaulted in the security control room.
She later filed a First Information Report (FIR), leading to the arrest of the three individuals, alumnus and main accused Manojit Mishra, and current students Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukhopadhyay, along with the college’s night-shift security guard, as per PTI.

Kolkata police formed a nine-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) which has recovered key CCTV footage and seized clothing worn by the accused. News18 reported that garments matching those seen in the video, including a red kurta and brown pants, were recovered from Mishra’s residence. Forensic reports are awaited.
A police officer told PTI that the entire incident was pre-planned. “The entire matter was premeditated. The trio had been plotting for several days to carry out this torture on the victim. We have found that the victim was targeted by the prime accused from the very first day she got admission to the college,” he said.
The SIT is also investigating whether the assault was recorded and shared digitally. It has also prepared a list of about 25 people, including students, who were present on the campus for further questioning, as per PTI.
Manojit Mishra’s past criminal record
As per a News18 report, the main accused, Manojit Mishra, has a history of violent behaviour, including allegedly assaulting a police officer in April earlier this year and attempting to kill a fellow student in September 2024.
