
Wangchuk began a hunger strike on September 10 and demanded statehood for the Union Territory of Ladakh and inclusion under Sixth Schedule of the Constitution.
However, he did not end his strike despite many leaders urging him to do so, the Ministry of Home Affairs said in a statement. “He continued with the hunger strike, misleading the people through provocative mention of Arab Spring-style protest and references to Gen Z protests in Nepal,” it added.
Violent protests broke out in Ladakh’s Leh on September 24 which witnessed the torching of the BJP office.
“Incidentally, amidst these violent developments, he broke his fast and left for his village in an ambulance without making serious efforts to control the situation,” the statement further read.
Curfew imposed, LG alleges conspiracy
Curfew has been imposed in Ladakh’s Leh as the protests turned violent. Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta announced the curfew to prevent more violence in the Union Territory, while alleging a conspiracy behind the clashes.
“The curfew has been imposed as a precautionary measure. People have lost their lives here and I express my condolences to their families. All necessary measures will be taken to prevent more casualties,” Gupta said, as per news agency PTI.
“Violence has been orchestrated under a conspiracy to disturb the peaceful atmosphere in Ladakh,” he added, further stating that any form of violence will not be tolerated.

BJP office torchedÂ
The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) office in Leh was torched by the protestors on September 24 after clashes broke out between the demonstrators and the police.
The police fired teargas shells and resorted to baton charge to control the crowd. Stone pelting by the youth was also reported.
At least four people died while 45 others were left injured, including 22 police officials, as per PTI.
What were the protests about?Â
The protestors were demanding statehood of the Union Territory of Ladakh and its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
The protests were led by the Leh Apex Body (LAB) which turned violent as the protestors alleged that the Centre did not acknowledge their demands.
The LAB group had called for protests on September 24 after two of its members, who were on a 35-day hunger strike which started on September 10, fell ill and were taken to hospital on the evening of Tuesday, September 23, according to News18.
Congress councillor chargedÂ
Congress Councilor Phuntsog Stanzin Tsepag as also been charged over the violence, as per NDTV.
The BJP blamed the Congress party for violence and shared pictures of Congress member Tsepag allegedly being part of the mob.
