The Election Commission of India has addressed this before. A voter can still cast their ballot – even without carrying a physical card – as long as their name is present in the official electoral roll of the constituency.
Electoral roll check: The key requirement for voting
The voter list matters more than the card itself.
Polling officials first check whether a person’s name appears on the electoral roll assigned to that booth. If it does, their identity can be verified using other approved documents. Only after that does the process move forward.
No name on the list, however, means no vote. That rule does not change.
List of accepted alternative ID proofs for polling
The commission has specified a set of identity proofs that can be used in place of the Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC). These documents must carry a photograph.
Accepted IDs include:
Passport
Driving licence
PAN card
Aadhaar card
Service identity cards issued by government departments, PSUs, or public limited companies
Bank or post office passbooks with a photograph
MNREGA job card
Health insurance smart card issued under Labour Ministry schemes
Pension documents with photograph
Identity cards issued to MPs, MLAs, or MLCs
Smart cards issued under the National Population Register
Each of these can serve as valid proof at the polling station.
Documents not accepted as valid ID at booths
The photo voter slip often causes mix-ups. It is issued for convenience and booth details. But it is not accepted as a standalone identity proof. Voters carrying only this slip may still be asked for another document.
What voters should carry on polling day
Voters are advised to check their names in the electoral roll in advance. Carrying at least one valid photo ID from the approved list reduces delays.
The process itself remains straightforward. Verification first, and then the vote.
With polling scheduled across Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, turnout will depend not just on awareness, but also on avoiding last-minute confusion at the booth.
