CBSE is set to introduce a two-board-exam system for Class 10 beginning in 2026, allowing students an additional opportunity to improve their performance.
The clarification comes after the Board received representations seeking permission for students to skip the first exam due to various reasons and appear directly in the second phase.
“It is mandatory for all students to appear in the first board examination. All passed, and eligible students will be allowed to improve their performance in any three subjects out of Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages,” CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj issued a statement.
He added that students who do not appear in at least three subjects in the first examination will not be permitted to sit for the second phase.
“Such students will be placed in the ‘Essential Repeat’ category and can take the examination only in the main board exams scheduled in February next year,” Bhardwaj added.
The CBSE clarified that students whose results in the first examination are Compartment, they will be allowed to appear in the second examination under the Compartment Category.
Also, additional subjects will not be permitted after passing class X, and students will not be allowed in stand-alone subjects, the Board said in a statement.
Here is the eligibility criteria to appear in the second examination:
- Improvement category up to 3 main subjects
- First/Third Chance Compartment
- Compartment + Improvement
- Improvement for the students who passed the replacement of the subject.
