
Jarange vowed to give up water if his demands were not met by the government. He was given an extension for a day to protest at Azad Maidan by Mumbai Police.
Jarange started his indefinite hunger strike on August 29. He demands 10% quote for the Maratha community under the Other Backwards Class (OBC) category.
Bombay HC order
In a big respite for Mumbaikars, the Bombay High Court on September 1, ordered to evict protesters from all places except Azad Maian. The court will continue to hear the case tomorrow, and measures taken by the state government.
The court agreed to have a special hearing session on a plea filed against the ongoing protests. The petition was filed by Amy Foundation against Jarange’s protests.

“The entire city was brought to a standstill. The protest was not peaceful and all conditions were violated,” observed the bench of Justices Ravindra Ghuge and Gautam Ankhad.
The High Court has been on holiday since August 27 due to the ongoing Ganesh festival in the state, and will resume on Tuesday, September 2.
CM Fadnavis chairs meeting
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis chaired a meeting with officials on September 1 to discuss the Maratha reservation issue.
The meeting was also attended by Maharashtra Deputy CMs Eknath Shinde, and Ajit Pawar.
