The husband-wife face-off took place during Question Hour in the state assembly on Wednesday. The unusual yet powerful democratic moment was noted for its professional decorum despite their personal relationship, with both adhering strictly to parliamentary protocol by addressing the Speaker.
Representing Gambegre, Mehtab sought details on the 2022 cabinet-approved projects, including a proposed veterinary college, two fishery colleges and a dairy college. She also mentioned staff shortages in veterinary training centres around the state and inquired about the efforts being taken to solve the issue.
Replying on behalf of the government, CM Sangma outlined that the proposed institutions aim to bolster the livestock industry to support the state’s significant animal husbandry population. “These were the three colleges which we have decided because of the urgent need, keeping in mind that a large population of the state is engaged in livestock rearing,” the CM said.
While addressing manpower shortages as a concern, he noted that detailed project report delays stem from challenges in land identification and planning.
“It is definitely a matter of concern. Steps are being taken to ensure the manpower shortage is filled up at the earliest,” he continued, assuring the House that filling vacancies would be given priority.
Approximately 800 acres of land have been identified at Kyrdemkulai in Ri-Bhoi district for the proposed veterinary college, which is expected to cost approximately Rs 334 crore and house 19 departments.
The chief minister pledged to expedite the process despite stating that the financial requirement was significant.
The exchange rapidly gained attention, with many noticing the rare sight of a husband and wife debating policy within the House. A video of the discussion later goes viral on social media.
Mehtab is a first-time legislator from the Gambegre constituency in Meghalaya. She represents the National People’s Party (NPP) in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
