“The Constitution of India is the mother of Indian democracy… So, fearing these things, should the Election Commission, getting misled by some people, pave the way for some to cast fake votes in the name of deceased voters, voters who have migrated permanently, voters who have got their votes registered at two places, fake voters or foreign voters, going against the Constitution, first in Bihar, then in the entire country?” the ECI said, news agency ANI reported.

According to the ECI, preparing authentic voter lists through a transparent process is the foundation stone for a strong democracy. The ECI urged citizens to think deeply about these issues, beyond political ideologies, and emphasised that the time for such reflection is now.
“Isn’t the authentic voter list being prepared by the Election Commission through a transparent process, the foundation stone for fair elections and a strong democracy? On these questions, sometimes or other, all of us and all the citizens of India will have to think deeply, going beyond political ideologies. And perhaps the most appropriate time for this essential thinking for all of you has now arrived in India,” it added.
On Wednesday, Samajwadi Party MP Akhilesh Yadav launched a harsh attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Election Commission (EC) over the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process in Bihar, claiming that the poll body is working contrary to its mandate.
“The Election Commission’s job is not to cut votes, but to add new voters…Today, that which is happening in Bihar will happen in UP tomorrow,” he said.
Congress leader Shama Mohamed also launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led NDA government over SIR, stating that there is no transparency within the ECI. Speaking with ANI, she said, “Why did the Election Commission start the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise three months before the Bihar Assembly elections… The Election Commission of India is fooling the public…”
Amid protests against the SIR in Bihar, Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday claimed that an ‘election theft’ is ongoing in the country. “Hindustan mein election chori kiye jaa rahe hai (Election/Votes are being stolen in India),” he said.
He was responding to a question concerning 52 lakh voters being removed from the Bihar voter list during the SIR process.

“This is not only about 52 lakh votes or about Bihar. They cheated in Maharashtra. We requested that the Election Commission show us the voters’ list. They didn’t show us that. We said, ‘Show us the video. ‘ They changed the rules. They stole the elections. Maharashtra had one crore new voters,” the Lok Sabha LoP added.
