IITs and IIMs draw the brightest brains from around the country and the world. However, only four cities in India are home to both an IIT and an IIM.
Guwahati
Guwahati (Assam) is the most recent city to be listed as having both an IIT and an IIM. Although IIT Guwahati was founded 34 years ago, IIM Guwahati is the latest addition to India’s list of IIMs, and is expected to open in 2025–2026. The Lok Sabha approved the Indian Institutes of Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025, through a voice vote on Tuesday (September 9), establishing IIM Guwahati as a nationally significant institution.
IIT Guwahati was founded in 1994, and its academic program started in 1995. The QS World University Rankings 2025 placed IIT Guwahati at 344 worldwide. According to the NIRF 2024 rankings, it was the 7th-best engineering college in India.
Indore
Indore, Madhya Pradesh, comes next. Due to the presence of IIT Indore and IIM Indore campuses, the city is referred to as the state’s educational hub. With related additional benefits like industry recruitment, startup creation, and local ecosystem growth, Indore has already established itself as a strong hub for engineering and management.
Under the Institute of Technology (Amendment) Act of 2011, the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India founded IIT Indore in 2009. Meanwhile, IIM Indore was established in 1996, and it is the sixth IIM. In 2017, it was designated as an “Institute of National Importance,” along with other IIMs.
Mumbai
Mumbai, one of India’s largest metropolitan cities, is the third city to house both IIT and IIM. Founded in 1963, the National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Mumbai (NITIE Mumbai) became an IIM in 2023. With support from UNESCO and funding from the Soviet Union, IIT Bombay became the nation’s second IIT.
IIM Mumbai, located in Powai, rose from 7th place in 2023 to the sixth spot among management schools in India, according to the most recent NIRF rankings.
Jammu
More recently, Jammu has joined this list with IIT Jammu and IIM Jammu. Established in 2016, IIM Jammu is one of the latest IIMs in the country. Currently, it offers executive education, faculty development, master’s degrees in Business Administration (MBA), and doctorates in Business Administration (DBA) in management.
IIT Jammu was also established in 2016. It was established with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Higher Education, Government of Jammu and Kashmir, and the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. IIT Jammu received a 62nd place ranking in the NIRF 2024 ‘Engineering’ category.
