Designed to promote women’s empowerment and self-reliance (aatmanirbharta), the scheme aims to create self-employment and livelihood opportunities. It is universal in scope, providing financial assistance to one woman from every family in Bihar to help them start or expand income-generating activities.
An initial grant of ₹10,000 will be given, with the possibility of up to ₹2 lakh in additional support in later phases, officials said. The initiative will be community-driven, with training provided by resource persons affiliated with self-help groups. To facilitate the sale of goods and services, rural markets (gramin haats) will be further developed.
The launch comes amid a flurry of development and welfare announcements by the NDA governments at the Centre and in Bihar, ahead of the upcoming state elections, as the ruling alliance seeks to retain power.
RJD MP Sanjay Yadav hit out at the NDA government, saying, “This is a copycat government. What have they been doing for twenty years? Their eyes only opened after the Leader of the Opposition, Tejashwi Yadav, announced the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, which gives ₹2,500 per month. They’re copying it. They’re giving them ₹10,000 as a loan. This is an election bribe. It shows that you’re scared, desperate, and hopeless.”
