
Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains announced on X (formerly Twitter) that all government aided and private schools and colleges will be shut till September 7.
“As directed by Hon’ble CM Punjab Shree Bhagwant Singh Mann Ji, in view of the flood situation, all government/aided/recognised and private schools, colleges, universities & polytechnics across Punjab will remain closed till September 7, 2025,” he said in a statement.
“Everyone is requested to strictly follow local administration’s guidelines,” Bains added.

Locals near Sutlej River alerted
The district administration of Punjab’s Rupnagar cautioned the local residents living near the banks of Sutlej River following discharge of huge amount of water from the Bhakra Nangal dam.
News agency PTI reported that at 6 am on September 3, the water level in the Bhakra dam was at 1,677.84 feet, nearing its maximum capacity of 1,680 feet.
Heavy rainfall in Punjab, and nearby state of Himachal Pradesh, has led to the increase in water discharge from 65,000 cusecs to 75,000 cusecs.
Similarly, the locals of Sri Anandpur Sahib region have also been asked to remain alerted and have been urged to move to safer places.
Huge rainfall recorded across Punjab
The incessant rains have caused havoc in the state from last week. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), during the 24-hour period till 8:30 am on Wednesday, September 3, Gurdaspur received nearly 100 mm of rains.
Amritsar received 27.6 mm of rain, Ludhiana 29.8 mm, Patiala 9.2 mm, Pathankot 41.2 mm, Gurdaspur 94.7 mm while Mohali recorded 55.5 mm rain, as per PTI.
