Money market and banking operations in Mumbai will remain closed on Monday, September 8, 2025, instead of Friday, September 5, after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) shifted the holiday date in line with the Maharashtra government’s decision to reschedule the public holiday for Eid-e-Milad.
The state government announced that in Mumbai city and suburban districts, the holiday will now be observed on September 8 instead of September 5, to avoid an overlap with Anant Chaturdashi on September 6, when Ganesh idol immersion processions take place.
The move ensures smoother festival management and avoids logistical challenges for both communities.
According to a circular from the General Administration Department (GAD), the change applies only to Mumbai and its suburbs.
In all other districts of Maharashtra, as well as across India, September 5 will remain a public holiday for Eid-e-Milad as per the notified list of gazetted holidays.
The GAD also clarified that government offices in Mumbai city and suburbs will remain open as usual on September 5, with the holiday officially shifted to September 8. Globally, Eid Milad-un-Nabi celebrations will commence on the evening of September 4 and conclude on the evening of September 5.
