Singh is a retired IAS officer of the Bihar cadre of the 1975 batch. He was known as a strict and disciplined officer, especially when he was the district magistrate of Samastipur.
During the early 1990s, Advani, one of the founders of the BJP, started a rath yatra from Somnath in Gujarat in order to gather support for the Ram Temple movement.
As the rath yatra entered Bihar, the situation escalated due to the concerns of the then-Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav, who feared that the procession could cause law and order issues and communal tension in the state.
Yadav decided to stop the yatra and ordered the arrest of Advani, then deputy prime minister. Following this order, RK Singh carried out the decision and arrested Advani.
Singh even served as home secretary during the Manmohan Singh government, when he worked on major national issues such as internal security, Naxal violence, and terrorism. He also played a key role in strengthening the national security system after the Mumbai 26/11 attacks
He joined the BJP in 2013 and won the Arrah Lok Sabha seat twice (2014 and 2019) and became an MP. In the Modi 1.0 government, he was made minister of power in 2017.

After losing the 2024 Lok Sabha election from Arrah, he became openly critical of the BJP and the Bihar leadership.
He specifically targeted Bihar BJP leaders Samrat Choudhary and Dilip Jaiswal, especially after corruption allegations were raised against them by political strategist Prashant Kishor and accused them of damaging the party’s image, reported NDTV.
He was then suspended on the grounds of anti-party activities.
