
Mizoram: Schools in Mizoram will be closed on Thursday (May 29) due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, along with gusty winds. According to a directive issued by the state school department, heavy rainfall is expected based on weather forecast warnings given by the IMD and the Mizoram Disaster Management and Reconstruction Department. It directed that all schools in the state remain closed as a preventive measure to prevent any disaster.
Karnataka:
According to the weather department, heavy to very heavy rain with sustained winds of 40-50 kmph is expected on May 30 in one or two locations in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts. Heavy rain with sustained winds of 30-40 kmph is also expected in one or two locations in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada districts on May 31, with rain likely on June 1 as well.
Meanwhile, authorities have declared a two-day holiday in Kodagu district for Anganwadi centres, primary and high schools, and pre-university colleges on Thursday and Friday. The district has been experiencing consistent downpours and strong storms, forcing District Collector Venkat Raja to issue this order as a precautionary measure.
Goa: Adding to the series of weather disruptions, a public meeting of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge scheduled for May 30 in Goa has been cancelled due to heavy rain in the state. Speaking with PTI, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) senior vice president MK Sheikh said the meeting was supposed to commemorate Goa Statehood Day “but due to rains, we won’t be able to hold it. We will hold the meeting after the monsoon”. The state has been experiencing severe rainfall for the past four days, with the arrival of the southwest monsoon.
Odisha: The IMD stated that the southwest monsoon arrived in several regions of Odisha on Wednesday, almost 13 days earlier than usual. Various districts have experienced severe rainfall since Tuesday, with Odisha receiving 50% more than typical rainfall during the pre-monsoon season of March to May.
In an X post on Wednesday, the IMD said, “Southwest Monsoon has set in over Odisha, today the 28th May, 2025. It covered the entire Malkangiri & Koraput districts and some parts of Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Rayagada and Gajapati districts of Odisha.” Previously, the weather department issued an ‘orange’ alert in five regions where lightning and thunderstorms with high gusts were expected until May 30.
Assam: The weather department has predicted inclement weather over the state in the next 24 hours, with heavy to extremely heavy rains predicted on May 29 and 30. According to the IMD forecast, a low-pressure region over the Northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast is expected to travel northward and consolidate into a depression over the North Bay of Bengal within the next 24 hours. As a result, heavy to extremely heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are forecast in Assam’s western and southern regions.
Heat wave warnings: The IMD predicted heat wave conditions in isolated pockets of West Rajasthan on May 29.
Maximum Temperature Forecast | In its bulletin, the weather agency said that Northwest India is likely to experience a rise by about 2-3°C in maximum temperatures in the next two days, gradual fall by 2-4°C thereafter for subsequent three days and no large change thereafter.
No significant change in maximum temperatures is expected over Central India in the next twi days, gradual rise by 2-3°C thereafter for the subsequent 3 days and no large change thereafter. Meanwhile, the rest of the country is expected to see no significant change in maximum temperatures.
