The founder of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was undergoing treatment at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Delhi, for over than a month. Soren was suffering from a kidney condition and reportedly had a stroke one and a half months ago. He was on a life support system for a month.
On June 19, 2025, he was transferred from Ranchi to the hospital in Delhi. His son and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced the news in a message posted on X, writing, “Respected Guru Dishom has left us all. Today, I have become empty…”

Shibu Soren was a three-time chief minister of Jharkhand, in March 2005 (for ten days from March 2 to March 11), August 27, 2008, to January 12, 2009, and December 30, 2009, to May 31, 2010.
Following the passing of the former Jharkhand Chief Minister, the leaders across India paid heartfelt tributes to him.
President Droupadi Murmu extended condolences to Hemant Soren and his family, describing Shibu Soren’s death as a “big loss in the space of social justice.”
In a post on X, she wrote, “He championed the cause of tribal identity and formation of the state of Jharkhand. Besides his work at the grassroots, he also contributed as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand, as a Union Minister and as a Member of Parliament. His emphasis on the welfare of the people, especially the tribal communities, will always be remembered. Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also expressed grief over the demise of the veteran leader. Former Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal condoled the death of Shibu Soren. “The news of the passing of the revered Dishom Guru Shri Shibu Soren Ji is deeply painful. Dishom Guru Shri Shibu Soren Ji was not only a politician but also the soul of Jharkhand and the tribal community. He struggled throughout his life for tribal rights, water-forest-land, and constitutional justice. His passing marks the end of an era. His departure is an irreparable loss to the country’s politics and the tribal movement,” he wrote on X.

Shibu Soren was born in the Ramgarh district (then part of Bihar) in 1944 and belonged to the Santhal ethnic group. He married Roopi Kisku and had three sons: Durga Soren, Hemant Soren, and Basant Soren, as well as a daughter named Anjali Soren.
