K Appala Naidu pledged ₹50,000 for every third-born girl child, to be deposited as a fixed deposit, which he claimed could grow to ₹10 lakh by marriage age. If the third child is a boy, the family would receive a cow and a calf, he said.
“If the third child is a boy, we will give a cow and a calf. If it’s a girl, we will make a ₹50,000 fixed deposit. The Indian population must grow,” Naidu told the media.
TDP distances itself from MP’s remarks
The TDP has distanced itself from Naidu’s statement, clarifying that he made these remarks in a personal capacity.
The comments come in the backdrop of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s appeal for families to have more children. The CM has flagged concerns over declining birth rates and its potential impact on Andhra Pradesh’s future.
Three-child rule for local body elections?
Chandrababu Naidu had earlier proposed a new eligibility rule for contesting local body elections, stating that individuals must have at least three children to qualify for positions such as sarpanch, municipal councillor, corporation chairman, or mayor.
Citing demographic projections, he expressed concern over a potential population decline in Andhra Pradesh:
2026: 53.8 million
2031: 54.2 million
2036: 54.4 million
2041: 54.2 million
2051: 54.1 million
Naidu has repeatedly warned about falling birth rates and their long-term consequences, urging the state to avoid the mistakes of countries facing aging population challenges.
