While US President Donald Trump has defended foreign students as “good” for US universities, actions taken by his administration have directly affected international students.
The US government has revoked thousands of visas, arrested students linked to pro-Palestinian activities and introduced tighter application and compliance requirements. It has also moved against leading universities over their handling of international student admissions and adherence to visa rules.
Harvard University challenged an attempt by the administration to block it from admitting foreign students, a move that was stayed by a court order. While a judge barred the enforcement of the ban, the US has since appealed the decision.
The impact of these measures is already visible. Fewer international students, particularly from India, enrolled in US universities in the academic year beginning in September, after August recorded the sharpest decline in US student visas issued. Indian students received 44.5% fewer US student visas year-on-year in the first year of the Trump administration’s second term at the White House.
