But, another poll-bound state Assam was not mentioned in the list of the states gearing up for the SIR 2.0 exercise. The CEC, however, stated that Assam will see a separate voter revision.
CEC Kumar reasoned that it is due to separate provisions for citizenship which are applicable for the Northeastern state.
“Under India’s Citizenship Act, there are separate provisions for Assam. Under the supervision of the Supreme Court, the checking of citizenship there is about to be completed,” he said.
“The June 24 SIR order was for the entire country. Under such circumstances, this would not have been applicable to Assam. So, separate orders for revision will be issued for Assam,” CEC Gyanesh Kumar added.

The Election Commission announced the second phase of the SIR exercise across 12 states and UTs, including, Andaman & Nicobar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Kerala, Lakshadweep, Madhya Pradesh, Puducherry, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam and Puducherry are scheduled to go to polls in 2026.
Bihar, which is going to have assembly elections in two phases – voting on November 6 & 11 and results on November 14, concluded the SIR exercise.
With Bihar witnessed a heated politics with the Opposition criticising the Bihar revisions ahead of the polls and accusing the election commission of helping the ruling BJP of manipulating the voter list, it would be significant to see how the process plays out in the above states and UTs.
